Tanzania’s sunflower oil industry has great potential - BTMA
18 Feb. According to the survey, although the sunflower oil industry has broad and promising production potential, imported edible oil still accounts for 60% of the total demand. The fundamental reason is that the local sunflower oil production efficiency is low, and the national average output is as low as 0.6 tons /acre.
Tanzania’s sunflower oil producers come into bloom. With an annual output of around 350,000 tons of sunflower oilseeds, corresponding to about 90,000 tons of oil, Tanzania is one of the top ten sunflower oilseed producers in the world. Sunflowers are grown all over the country, mostly by small-scale farmers.

feeds. Currently sunflower oil makes about 13% of the world edible oil production. Sunflower was introduced in Tanzania during colonial times and it was found to grow in almost all parts of the country. Interestingly, the crop grows well in the dry weather conditions of the Central Corridor compared to other crops like maize and wheat.
To be specific, oil-used sunflower seeds contain 45%~60% of the oil which is suitable for the pre-pressing and leaching method: In the 1 st, the raw seeds are pre-squeezed by means of a continuous screw press. The 2 nd extraction type is solvent extraction, and the commonly used solvent is mainly hexane-based solvent VI or other solvents such
Tanzania Sunflower Sector Development Strategy 2016-2020
The United Republic of Tanzania has a large, national demand for edible oil. The Rural Livelihood Development Company estimated a minimum national demand of around 330,000 tons of edible oil per annum in 2010, a figure that was expected to increase as consumption rose by 3% annually. Currently more than half of the edible oil consumed is imported.

The fundamental reason is the efficiency of local sunflower oil production.
Current status and prospects of improving sunflower production
A similar trend was observed for the number of Sunflower seeds per plant, the weight of sunflower seeds per plant, Sunflower achene yield, and Sunflower stover yields with the best-performing
Sunflowers are mostly produced by one million smallholder farmers in 19 out of the total 30 regions of Tanzania, but production is mainly concentrated in the Central Corridor and the Southern Highlands. The demand for sunflower products is growing in Tanzania, mainly to meet a growing domestic market for cooking oil.
Sunflower Oil Refinery Plant Process, Oil Expeller
The most suitable temperature for the growth of sunflower seed is 20 – 27°C with abundant water. There are several varieties of seeds available consisting of 36% of Oil to 40% oil-based on cultivated area soil condition and species of the seed. The oil extracted from sunflower seeds either by Screw Press or by Solvent Extraction Process.
