H&H Commercial Trade LTD. and its parent company AmCan group have opened a feed mill and canola crushing plant within the northeast community. The new plant officially celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday (Oct. 18) alongside Melfort Mayor Glenn George.

MSM Milling¡¯s current plant uses mechanical pressing to produce canola oil and meal. The expansion will see the company incorporate solvent-extraction technology in its operation which will increase the amount of oil extracted from the canola seed.
How does canola oil work?
The company and its plant will take canola from local farmers and extract the oil from the seeds while using the rest for animal feed. They will then sell the oil back locally, or in most cases, export the oil out of the country to places like China or the United States, so it can be purified again and put back into local markets.
How is canola processed?
At that point, processors may use several different methods to process canola seed into oil and meal. Traditionally, flaked canola is moved through stacked cooking and heating vessels to steam-heat the material, releasing the oil inside, hardening the structure, and reducing the moisture level for optimal extraction.
