Why is machine sizing important for castor oil production?
Machine sizing is key to maintaining a continuous castor oil production process, since oversized machines will not press material efficiently, and can unnecessarily increase a plant¡¯s capital expenditures and operating costs over time.
How is castor oil transesterified?
Transesterification of castor oil was performed in batch mode with the help of three-necked flat round bottom flask with a reflux system and hot plate magnetic stirrer. Reaction temperature was controlled by a thermocouple and methanol vaporization was prevented by the reflux system.
How is castor oil produced?
As with most oilseeds, the castor oil production process begins with dehulling and cleaning the beans to remove shells, stems, and other foreign materials. Oil processors then heat batches of dehulled castor beans in steam-jacketed cookers or forced hot air vessels to remove moisture and harden the seeds for more effective mechanical pressing.
How to remove impurities from feed stock castor oil?
The impurities and moisture content in the feed stock castor oil was removed by filtration and drying in a hot air oven at ~120 °C. All the chemicals (methanol, potassium hydroxide, diethyl ether, glacial acetic acid, iodine, hexane and silica gel) were procured from Sisco Research laboratories Pvt., Ltd., Mumbai, India.
