In recent years, the production and application of flaxseed oil have become one of the most concerned research topics in food industry due to its multiple health functions, great potential and development prospects. However, the poor stability and easy oxidation of flaxseed oil have become the main factors limiting its application.
How is flaxseed oil extracted?
This work compares the yield and quality of the flaxseed oil obtained by individually optimized supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (SCE), three-phase partitioning (TPP), solvent extraction and the reported values of cold press extraction.
Does flaxseed oil contain Ala?
The bioavailability of ALA in oil is higher than that of ground seed and whole seed (Austria et al., 2008). In addition, flaxseed oil contains a large number of unsaturated fatty acids, which are highly oxidation sensitive and easy to be oxidized during the later storage and processing.
Which extraction method gives the highest yield of oil from flaxseed?
Solvent extraction gave the highest oil yield. Oil extracted by SCE showed the best quality in terms of unsaturation and antioxidant activity. Enzymatic pre-treated TPP is a promising approach for extraction of oil from flaxseed as it simultaneously separates protein and oil.
