This work compares the yield and quality of the flaxseed oil obtained by individually optimized supercritical carbon dioxide extraction (SCE), three-phase partitioning (TPP), solvent extraction and the reported values of cold press extraction.

Food-grade flaxseed oil is cold-pressed , obtained without solvent extraction, in the absence of oxygen, and marketed as edible flaxseed oil. Fresh, refrigerated and unprocessed, linseed oil is used as a nutritional supplement and is a traditional European ethnic food, highly regarded for its nutty flavor.
Which extraction method gives the highest yield of oil from flaxseed?
Solvent extraction gave the highest oil yield. Oil extracted by SCE showed the best quality in terms of unsaturation and antioxidant activity. Enzymatic pre-treated TPP is a promising approach for extraction of oil from flaxseed as it simultaneously separates protein and oil.
