Oxidation can occur in stored linseed as well as in linseed oil. Moist seeds in particular were often subject to fungal decay, increasing free fatty acid concentration and lowering oil content considerably by oxidizing ALA (Nykter et al. 2006 ).
How is linseed oil made?
Linseed oil for pharmaceutical uses is cold pressed from the ripe, crushed seeds (Hager 1993, p. 673). This is carried out using a screw compressor; the seeds are pushed through a pressing cylinder at low pressure and a maximum temperature of 40 °C.
Why is linseed suitable for organic farming?
As N availability is often restricted in organic farming, the low N demand of linseed related to a good performance in oil yield and oil quality makes the crop very suitable for organic farming systems in temperate regions. Linseed is not the only annual oil crop which contains undesired, antinutritive ingredients.
Can linseed oil be used in organic food processing?
However, the use of solvents like petroleum distillates is forbidden in organic food processing (Zheng et al. 2003 ). Due to standards for organic farming and food production, commercially available organic linseed oils are cold pressed and filtered.
