Oil from Rice Bran and its Processing Technology
In this technology, the cell tissue of rice bran is hydrolyzed with protease and then oil is released to achieve the purpose of oil extraction (Hanmoungjai et al. 2001). In a previous study, Chen (2014) used alkaline protease to extract oil from rice bran and determined the optimal process parameters.
Rice bran crude oil contains free fatty acids, bran wax, phospholipids, proteins, and pigments. As edible oil, it needs further purification and refining to remove these impurities. The rice bran oil refining equipment process is as follows: Crude rice bran oil → impurity removal → wax removal → hydration → alkali refining → water

1. Introduction. Rice bran is a byproduct of the rice milling industry obtained from milling of brown rice to produce white rice. It contains 15%–20% of oil. Apart from oil, rice bran is a promising source for proteins, carbohydrates, dietary fiber, vitamins, tocopherol, γ-oryzanol, and phospholipids (Tao, 1989; Houston, 1972; Saunders, 1986).
Quality Changes and Tocopherols and γ-Orizanol Concentrations in Rice
The quality changes and the concentrations of tocopherols and γ-oryzanol, during successive steps of rice bran oil refining (RBO), were studied. For this purpose, samples of crude, degummed, neutralized, bleached, dewaxed and deodorized RBO were taken from an industrial plant and analyzed. The moisture, pH, acidity, peroxide value and unsaponifiable matter, were determined. The fatty acid
Degumming. Rice Bran oil contain phosphatides like other oils 1.5% max. This will be removed through the standard degumming process by addition 2% water and 1kg to 1.5Kg of food grade phosphoric acid to the oil at 60°C and allowing to mix for 20 minutes and then by separating through the centrifugal separators.
Rice Bran Oil Physical Refining Process
Washing: After degummed oil is first heated to 75-78°C, temperature of 90-95 degrees Celsius was added, 8% oil, 5.0 wt% of alum was slowly stirred for 15 minutes, left to settle for two hours and then discharged oil feet. 3. Dry Degumming: Drying oil is heated to about 85 degrees Celsius, was added by a metering pump content of 85% phosphoric
Rice is one of the most important crops throughout the world, as it contributes toward satisfying the food demand of much of the global population. It is well known that rice production generates a considerable number of by-products, among which rice bran deserves particular attention. This by-product is exceptionally rich in nutrients, since it contains a wide spectrum of macronutrients
Assessment of physicochemical, functional, thermal, and phytochemical
This is the reason for the abundant production of rice bran oil from the intermediate by-products obtained during rice milling (Lavanya et al., 2017). The expelled oil from rice bran is crude and contains components like lecithin, gums, pigments, crude resinous matter, and waxes (Thangaraju et al., 2020). Waxes generally occur in all edible
Rice bran and rice bran oil stabilization RBO is considered as perfect and high-class cooking oil because of its low level of linolenic acid and its potential to lower serum cholesterol level. After milling, oil is very prone to degrade into FFA and glycerol by lipase activity, making it unfit for consumption.
- How is rice bran oil refined?
- After the extraction, the crude rice bran oil is often refined in order to improve its quality and commercial value. The fundamental steps of the refining process include dewaxing, degumming, neutralization of the free fatty acids, bleaching, and steam deodorization.
- What is rice bran?
- Rice bran is obtained from outer layer of the brown (husked) rice kernel during milling. It has emerged as potential by-product from rice processing industry due to the increasing demand for rice bran oil (RBO) as healthy functional food ingredients.
- What is rice bran oil (RBO)?
- This lipidic fraction can be extracted to obtain rice bran oil (RBO), a high value-added product with unique health properties as a result of its high concentration in ¦Ã-oryzanol, a powerful antioxidant mixture of bioactive molecules.
- Should rice bran be stabilized after production?
- It is advised to stabilize rice bran or RBO immediately upon production. High FFA results in high refining loss, therefore, it is beneficial to have FFA level of less than 5% in the crude RBO, and exceeding amount of FFA (> 10%) is unfit for human consumption ( Orthoefer and Eastman, 2005 ).
