- What grades of crude oil does Saudi Arabia produce?
- Saudi Arabia produces five grades of crude oil: Arabian Heavy, Arabian Medium, Arabian Light, Arabian Extra Light, and Arabian Super Light. In general, the majority of Saudi Arabia¡¯s crude oil is considered sour because its sulfur content is greater than 1% (Table 2).10
- Does Saudi Aramco have domestic refining capacity?
- Saudi Aramco reported domestic refining capacity at 2.9 million b/d in 2020 (45% of the global capacity Saudi Aramco held) prior to the Jazan Refinery Complex opening in 2021. Jazan, located in southwest Saudi Arabia, increased domestic capacity by an additional 400,000 b/d in 2021, while throughput remained at 50% (Table 4).15 Table 2.

- Saudi Arabia's proven crude reserves remained largely flat at 267.192 million barrels in 2021. Saudi Aramco plans to convert up to 4 million b/d of crude into chemical products by 2030, from 1 million b/d presently. The growth in product comes amid accelerating efforts to capture the growing market for product and feedstock in Asia.

- A modernisation project was completed at the refinery in 1984. The refinery was also upgraded by adding diglycol amine (DGA) regeneration plant and sour water stripper in 1999. Saudi Aramco launched a $2.6bn project, named the Ras Tanura refinery clean fuels and aromatics project, to improve the environmental friendliness of the plant.
