Why U.S. Oil Refineries Aren't Upgraded to Maximize Domestic Oil
1. Refinery Infrastructure. One key reason why U.S. refineries aren't quickly updated to process more domestic crude oil lies in the existing infrastructure. Many refineries in the U.S. are designed to process heavier grades of crude oil sourced from overseas, particularly from the Middle East and Latin America.
Port Arthur, TX is home to the U.S. refining fleet’s crown jewel. With an atmospheric distillation capacity of 603 MBbl/cd, this complex coking refinery is the largest refinery in the U.S. As of
Refining crude oil - the refining process - U.S. Energy
Refining breaks crude oil down into its various components, which are then selectively reconfigured into new products. Petroleum refineries are complex and expensive industrial facilities. All refineries have three basic steps: Separation; Conversion; Treatment; Separation. Modern separation involves piping crude oil through hot furnaces.

Refining crude oil - inputs and outputs - U.S. Energy
The average processing gain at U.S. refineries was about 6.3% in 2023. In 2023, U.S. refineries produced an average of about 45 gallons of refined products for every 42-gallon barrel of crude oil they refined. Click to enlarge. Click to enlarge. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Valero reported a net income attributable to stockholders of $1.2 billion, representing a decrease from $3.1 billion in the same period of 2022. This translated
Petroleum refining processes
Each refinery has its own unique arrangement and combination of refining processes largely determined by the refinery location, desired products and economic considerations. Some modern petroleum refineries process as much as 800,000 to 900,000 barrels (127,000 to 143,000 cubic meters) per day of crude oil.
In this process, crude oil is heated and fed into a distillation column. A schematic of the distillation column is shown in Figure 2.2 F i g u r e 2.2. As the temperature of the crude oil in the distillation column rises, the crude oil separates itself into different components, called “fractions.”. The fractions are then captured separately.
Life cycle assessment of petroleum refining process: A case
Life cycle inventory. Table 1 lists the LCI result of petroleum refining process. All materials, energy and water consumption, direct emissions, and waste disposal are presented based on function unit. In this study, refinery fuel gas and steam and a small percentage of electricity were produced from refinery itself.
The ex-oil-trader-turned-Delta-VP-of-Fuel, Jon Ruggles, left the company quite abruptly late last year. Ruggles, a key person behind the Trainer refinery deal, was hired away from Merrill Lynch
- What is the gross refining margin of a petroleum refinery?
- The gross refining margin of a petroleum refinery is defined as the difference between the value of petroleum products and the value of crude oil. When crude oil is processed in primary and secondary processing units of the refinery, it produces the lighter (LPG, gasoline, and naphtha) as well as heavier petroleum products (Furnace oil).
- What is a petroleum refinery?
- Petroleum refineries are large-scale industrial complexes that produce saleable petroleum products from crude oil (and sometimes other feedstocks like biomass). The details of refinery operations differ from location to location, but virtually all refineries share two basic processes for separating crude oil into the various product components.
- What is refining of petroleum?
- The refining of petroleum, that is, the transformation of crude oil into finished products, requires several operations that can be grouped as follows: A refinery consists of several distinct parts: blending facilities. The area covered by a refinery can reach several tens of hectares, but a large part of this area is covered by storage facilities
- Which chemical process is used in refining crude oil in petroleum refineries?
- Various chemical processes like distillation, cracking, polymerization, alkylation, coking and hydro treating are being used in refining process of crude oil in petroleum refineries in order to convert oil unto many products. In each and every process wastewater is generated per day in the refinery.
