Problems in Combing Process with Causes & Remedies - Textile
Last Updated on 31/10/2021 . Combing: For getting high quality of yarn, one extra process is introduced in cotton spinning which is called combing process. Generally, combing operation is used when high-quality fine cotton yarns (finer than approximately 15 tex) are required, improving the fiber straightening and alignment and removing short fibers, fiber hooks and any remaining neps and trash
Short Fiber Content: In cotton fibres, fiber length whose length is shorter than 12.5 mm are usually considered as short fiber content % (i.e. SFCn %) as determined by AFIS instrument. It is eliminated as waste in blow room, carding and also in comber noils. However, SFCn is ignored by majority of the mills being a critical factor driving the YR.
Combing, roving preparation, and spinning
Ring spinning. Roving. 5.1. Combing. Combing process removes short length fibers from the cotton fibers with the help of comber machine. Elimination of short length fibers improves the staple length of the cotton. The input material to a comber is lap which is prepared on lap forming machine (Fig. 5.1). The laps are prepared from slivers.
The high cost of removing even one percent extra comber waste makes it imperative that a mill should carefully choose the optimum level of comber waste for each mixing and then exercise a strict control on all combers to maintain the waste at the desired level. Comber noil is normally utilized in rotor spinning for producing very coarse counts.

100% Cotton Comber Noil. Cotton comber noil is one of the best quality of cotton waste. Comber Noil is a product that is derived from cotton yarn spinning factories as it is produced when cotton is combed to remove short fibres in combing Machines. Due to its unique feature like being Trash Free and clean, it can be used in multiple ways like
The cotton fibre is conventionally converted into woven and knitted fabrics by short staple spinning methods. The comber noil is short fibre waste produced when cotton yarns are combed. The aims of the current study were to employ comber noil for the preparation of hydroentangled cotton nonwovens at varying water jet pressures and conveyor speeds.
Utilization of Comber Noil in Open End Spinning
These research trails were made with two different noil percentages, 16% and 20% with different proportions of blending with cotton such as 20/80 (20% pure cotton / 80% noil), 50/50 and 80/20. yarn from counts of 20 s, or 32 s with the same process parameters from blowing room to open-end spinning.
It was revealed that 150 mm fiber length can be set in the staple cutter during spinning preparatory for all yarn counts; 19% and 7% comber noil extractions are required for first and second combing, respectively, to produce 40 and 60 Nm yarns, whereas for 80 Nm yarn about 1% more noil extraction is needed in both combing processes.
- How does Comber waste affect yarn quality?
- An increase in comber waste results in improvement in yarn quality till most fibers below 15mm length are removed. As a starting point, one can take comber waste level at S.F/2 around which actual experiments can be conducted to find out the optimum level in regard to yarn quality and breakage rate at ring frame.
- What is the minimum Comber waste?
- The minimum level of comber waste which gives the desired yarn quality, yarn appearance and end breaks at ring frame depends on nature of fiber length distribution in the cotton or mixing. Experience based information obtained by ATIRA in this regard is summarized as under: Table: Guidelines for optimum levels of comber waste.
- Is Comber Noil recyclable?
- As the fibres have already passed through the blow room and over the cards, it is a high-quality ¡°waste¡±. Comber noil is a recyclable raw material which is used, for instance, in banknotes or hygiene products. It can also be spun into excellent rotor yarns.
- Can Comber Noil be shortened?
- To allow processing into a good yarn, the fibre length can be significantly shorter thanks to the IDF. The yarn is of excellent quality even if 100% comber noil has been processed. Until now, this has not been possible without the shortened process.
