This documentary film, by PLAAS in partnership with ADECRU (Aco Académica para o Desenvolvimento das Comunidades Rurais) explores agro-food system change in rural Mozambique within the context of increasing levels of agro-investment and the promotion of soybean production. It highlights the differentiated impacts of the soya boom on
Full article: The significance of soybean production in the face
The world soybean production was projected at 311.1 million metric tons in 2020 and 371.3 million metric tons in 2030. The annual growth rates are 2.9% from 2005–07 to 2010 and were projected to be 2.5% from 2010 to 2020, and 1.8% from 2020 to 2030.
What farmers were lacking was knowledge of new techniques and technologies needed for improved production of soybean. In 2012, TechnoServe began the soy seed multiplication project – funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands – and worked with six small commercial farmers, helping them to transition to the new crop, and ultimately produce approximately 30 tons of soy seed.

Sustainable Soy Production: TechnoServe Inc. and Solidaridad team up
Southern Africa has a growing demand for soybean. This demand has led to a large number of farmers switching to soybean production. In an attempt to meet the expected domestic demand for soy in a sustainable manner, Solidaridad and TechnoServe are partnering in an initiative to promote and support the sustainable production of soy at farm level.
The objectives of this study are to (i) investigate the potential of organic and conventional farming to enhance the functional activity of bradyrhizobia species in promoting soybean growth, production and yield quality, (ii) to evaluate the effects of inoculation and co-inoculation with bradyrhizobia strains on promiscuous and non-promiscuous soybean variety and (iii) to assess arbuscular
Inoculant, nitrogen and phosphorus improves photosynthesis and water
It is projected that soybean production in eastern part of Africa spanning from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia could decline by 12% by 2090 due to water stress if climate change is not mitigated (Tatsumi et al., Reference Tatsumi, Yamashiki, Valmir da Silva, Takara, Matsuoka, Takahashi, Maruyama and Kawahara 2011).
Currently, biodiesel is produced using homogeneous basic catalysts such as sodium hydroxide due to its high commercial availability and affordable cost, however, it undesirably reacts with free fatty acids to produce soaps (sodium carboxylates), thus, requiring additional purification operations by removing impurities with water (Tacias-Pascacio et al., 2019).
- Do small-scale Soya farmers produce more maize than non-Soya producers?
- Results from the household survey showed (over all villages) that small-scale soya farmers allocated a significantly smaller proportion to their maize production (50.6 ± 1.3%, p < 0.01) compared to non-soya producing households (66.7 ± 1.1%).
- How do soya production models generate income?
- In addition to income generation for the producing farmer, all soya production models generated income opportunities for farm workers: 14.7% of the small-scale soya producers hired seasonal labour (n = 29) for field preparation and weeding (approx. 20 worker per hectare) and paid in kind or money equalling approximately 100 MZN per person, per day.
- Why are soya farmers not able to grow in land limited villages?
- Lower on-farm income for soya producers in land limited villages could be an indication of decreasing soil fertility, as a consequence of permanent cultivation, cash crop intercropping and difficulties in opening new fertile lands for cash crop cultivation.
