White River Soy Processing
Sustainable zero-waste processing system for soybeans and soy
Soybean meal is produced by different processing methods such as solvent extraction (soybean flakes 1.5% oil), and mechanical extraction by screw press (soymeal press cake >5% oil). Soymeal accounts for 62.5% of total oil meal and it also represents the 61% protein source to feed livestock (A. et al., 2011).
NOTE: The National Oilseed Processors Association (NOPA) represents the U.S. soybean, canola, axseed, sun ower seed and sa ower seed crushing industries. This owchart is an illustrative diagram of standardized steps employed in the processing of soybeans. The steps employed may vary from plant to plant and from oilseed to oilseed. SOYBEAN
Practical Handbook of Soybean Processing and Utilization
Publisher Summary. Soybeans are very important in the world production of oilseeds. Soybean dominance comes from a variety of factors, including favorable agronomic characteristics, reasonable returns to the farmer and processor, high-quality protein meal for animal feed, high-quality edible oil products, and the plentiful, dependable supply of soybeans available at a competitive price.
Extracted soybean flakes will normally exit a continuous extractor with a residual hexane content of 29 to 35% hexane on an “as is” basis. This chapter covers the removal, and recovery for reuse, of this residual hexane, and the cooking, drying, cooling, and sizing of the extracted meal as required for its principal end use in livestock feeds.

Soybean meal is produced after the extraction of oil from soybean seed using several processing operations (Fig. 2.1).Processing steps like cleaning, smashing, de-hulling, conditioning, flaking, and mechanical or solvent extraction steps have been followed in soybean oil processing plants to extract oil.
adequately heat processed soybean meal than KOH solubility. Soybean meal with a PDI of 15-30% is adequately heat processed. Properly processed soybean meal will have higher reactive lysine to total lysine, low TIA, and adequate KOH and PDI. These indicators are sensitive to heat during processing, so precision in soybean meal processing is

The Utilization and Processing of Soybean
- How is soybean meal produced?
- Soybean meal is produced after the extraction of oil from soybean seed using several processing operations (Fig. 2.1). Processing steps like cleaning, smashing, de-hulling, conditioning, flaking, and mechanical or solvent extraction steps have been followed in soybean oil processing plants to extract oil.
- What is soybean oil meal?
- The dominance of soybean oil meal is due to its high nutritional value and favorable cost of production. The term, ¡°soy proteins¡± refers to processed, edible dry soybean products other than animal feed meals. Many types are produced for use in human and pet foods, and milk replacers and starter feeds for young animals.
- How is soybean protein used in food and food product development?
- The use of soybean protein in food and food product development is highly dependent on its functional properties. Functional properties viz. solubility, water, and oil binding capacity, emulsion properties, etc. of soybean meal protein get highly affected by the extraction or preparation methods.
- What is the soybean processing industry?
- The soybean processing industry has developed manufacturing systems and procedures, trading rules, comprehensive product quality specifications, and quality control procedures to ensure finished products that consistently meet customer and consumer needs.
- How can advanced technology improve the soybean industry?
- The advent of advanced technologies can enhance the resource utilization of plant-based proteins compared to traditional processing methods. However, the creative combination of different technologies can bring more significant application potential to the soybean industry.
- What are traditional processing techniques for soybean products?
- Traditional processing techniques such as heat treatment, fermentation, enzyme catalysis and glycosylation play a crucial role in improving the nutritional, sensory characteristics and health-promoting features of soybean products. An overview of some common traditional processing technologies for SPs is shown in Fig. 3.
