Sunflower cultivation is a source of livelihood for many people, from cultivation to the production of edible oil. Although the sunflower crop is cultivated across different climate zones in Pakistan, southern parts, mainly Sindh and South Punjab, are considered more suitable for the sunflower crop.
In 1960,s first time sunflower was grown in Pakistan as a source of edible oil and to fulfill the gap between consumption of edible oil and country own production (Burney et al., 1990).
Trends in sunflower production and its potential
Sunflower is one of the four most important annual crops in the world grown for edible oil. In Pakistan although it was introduced as an oilseed crop 40 years back but its expansion in acreage and production is fluctuating due to various production and socioeconomic constraints.
In Pakistan, sunflower was introduced during 1960 with the object of bridging the gap between production and consumption of edible oil in the country (Burney et al., 1990).

Sunflower is presently considered an important oilseed and a majority of the people in Pakistan prefers sunflower oil for cooking. Hamid et al. (1999) reported that two sizes of beef pieces were used for pickle preparation and later stored in three commercial edible oils, i.e., canola oil, sunflower oil and soybean oil.

Sunflower. Sunflower is one of the most important oilseed crop of the world and 3 rd most important oilseed crop after cotton, rapeseed and mustard in Pakistan. Pakistan produced only 18% of required edible oil locally while the rest of edible oil has been imported from other countries. Sunflower contributes 11% in the local production of oil.
The edible oil imports bill rising from Rs. 77 million in 1969-70 to Rs. 3,900 million in 2002-03 has overburdened the economy of the country. Only 30% of the total needs are met through local production, while 70% are provided by import. Major share of the domestic production of edible oil comes from cottonseed and canola, 67 and 19.6%, respectively. The remaining 13.4% are contributed mainly
