SUNFLOWER AREA AND PRODUCTION VARIABILITY IN PAKISTAN
The edible oil imports bill rising from Rs. 77 million in 1969-70 to Rs. 3,900 million in 2002-03 has overburdened the economy of the country. Only 30% of the total needs are met through local production, while 70% are pro-vided by import. Major share of the domestic production of edible oil comes from cottonseed and canola, 67 and 19.6%
The production of edible oil in Pakistan is less than the required quantity. The scarcity of water resources is one of the major challenges all over the world in sunflower production.
Figure 1: Acreage and production of sunflower in Pakistan
In 1960,s first time sunflower was grown in Pakistan as a source of edible oil and to fulfill the gap between consumption of edible oil and country own production (Burney et al., 1990).
De-shelled pressing-leaching technology is the key point of sunflower oil production line which avoids the negative impact of over-refining, high temperature, and acid and alkali effects on oils, so that the nutrients in the oil can be well preserved. For example, the content of vitamin E in de-shelled squeezed sunflower oil is 75.5mg/100g.
Assessing the factors of economic and environmental
Edible oil is an essential part of food in Pakistan, and to meet the increasing demand for edible oil, the country is forced to import it from the international market (Khan et al., 2021). Consequently, Pakistan pays a significant portion of its foreign exchange reserves to purchase edible oil due to the inadequate indigenous production of oil
The cost of 1ton/day oil refinery plant is about $19800. For 1ton/day sunflower oil dewaxing machine, the price is about $13000. For large scale produciton line, the cost range of different project design could be tens of thousands of dollar.
Sunflower area and production variability in Pakistan
The sunflower production rose at the annual rate of 9.9%, comprised of a 9.7% expansion in acreage and a minor improvement in productivity amounting to 0.16%. This increase was not sufficient
production, total oilseed production in 2023/24 is projected to increase to 2.95 million tons, a 24 percent above than 2022/23. In line with population growth, edible oil demand is forecast to grow about 5 percent, and palm oil imports are forecast to grow accordingly, reaching 3.6 million tons in 2023/24.
Pakistan's Edible Oil Needs and Prospects for Self - JSTOR
Partly in response to rapidly growing imports and partly as a result of rising prices, Pakistan's edible oil import bill has multiplied by more than 900 fold between 1959-60 and 1997-98 which corresponds with an annual growth rate of 21.2 percent and involves more than doubling of import bill every 4 years. What is more alarming to.
In this article, we will discuss the complete sunflower oil production process in detail. Step 1: Cleaning and Shelling. The sunflower seeds are first cleaned and shelled in an oil mill. This process involves removing any impurities and outer shells from the seeds. Step 2: Cracking.
