SUNFLOWER AREA AND PRODUCTIONVAR IABILITY IN PAKISTAN
SUNFLOWER AREA AND PRODUCTION VARIABILITY IN PAKISTAN: OPPORTUNITIES AND CONSTRAINTS. Nisar Ali Shah, Hassnain Shah and Nadeem Akmal*. r, Islamabad, Pakistan Received: August 26, 2004 Accepted: November 22, 2005SUMMARYThe edible oil imports bill rising from Rs. 77 million in. 1969-70 to Rs. 3,900 million in 2002-03 has overburdened the economy
The sunflower production rose at the annual rate of 9.9%, comprised of a 9.7% expansion in acreage and a minor improvement in productivity amounting to 0.16%. This increase was not sufficient
Cultivating sunflower: A solution to Pakistan's oilseed
A government subsidy program has been initiated to boost sunflower production in Pakistan. Sunflower seeds contain 40 percent oil and are rich in vitamins A, B, and K. Sunflower oil is considered heart-healthy as it contains 90 percent unsaturated fatty acids, including 30 percent monounsaturated Omega-9 and 59 percent polyunsaturated Omega-6.
million tons in 2023/24. In line with expectations for the removal of the ban on GE soybean and canola imports, domestic oil and meal production are forecast to rebound in 2023/24. Due to the ban on GE soybean and canola imports, oilseed crushing activity in 2022/23 is the lowest in several years.
SUNFLOWER: ESSENTIAL EDIBLE OIL CROP IN PAKISTAN
In Pakistan it is grown on an area of 872 thousand acres with 554 thousand tons of seed and 211 tons of oil. Its achene contains 40-50% oil and 23% protein content. Sunflower oil is exclusively used for cooking purpose ; rich in vitamin A, D and contains 60% poly unsaturated fatty acids as well as 16% oleic acid and 76% linoleic acid.
Sunflower is presently considered an important oilseed and a majority of the people in Pakistan prefers sunflower oil for cooking. Hamid et al. (1999) reported that two sizes of beef pieces were used for pickle preparation and later stored in three commercial edible oils, i.e., canola oil, sunflower oil and soybean oil.

Soybean production in Pakistan: experiences, challenges
Soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.), an oilseed crop has the potential to fill the gap between demand and domestic oilseeds production in Pakistan. Soybean seed contains 40-42% protein, 20-22% oil
In Pakistan, soybean was introduced in the 1960’s and after preliminary trials in Sindh province, its seed was released commercially in the 1970s along with sunflower
- What are the major bottlenecks for soybean cultivation in Pakistan?
- Moreover, the absence of area-specific production technology, non-existence of extension service, and lack of coherent policy to promote local oilseed production are the major bottlenecks for the cultivation of soybean in Pakistan.
- When was soybean introduced in Pakistan?
- Soybean was introduced in Pakistan as an oilseed crop during the early 1960s, but its cultivation remained limited until 1970s when adaptability and production trials conducted all over the county yielded promising results.
- Which region is best suited for soybean cultivation in Pakistan?
- Based on these trials' vast areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP, formerly NWFP), Punjab and Sindh were found most suitable for commercial cultivation of soybean. However, at the onset of the current century, soybean cultivation was halted, and it gradually disappeared from cropping schemes of Pakistan.
- Why is soybean an important oilseed crop?
- Soybean (Glycine max L.) is an important oilseed crop worldwide owing to its diversity of end uses. In the year 2019-20, globally 341.76 million metric tons of soybean was produced which is 61% of the total oilseeds production. Its seed contains 18-23% oil and 38-44% protein. Seed is processed to extract oil for human consumption.
