in sunflower acreage and production are due to its price on the market. In the period of last 15 years, the sunflower acreage in Pakistan expended from 29,500 to 107,700 ha. The sunflower production rose at the annual rate of 9.9%, comprised of a 9.7% expansion in acreage and a minor improvement in productivity amounting to 0.16%.
In 1960,s first time sunflower was grown in Pakistan as a source of edible oil and to fulfill the gap between consumption of edible oil and country own production (Burney et al., 1990).

Sunflower contributes 11% in the local production of oil. Government has paid special attention and launched a subsidy program to enhance the production of sunflower in Pakistan. Sunflower seed contains 40% oil content and good source of vitamin A, B, K. Sunflower oil is considered best for heart patients as it contains 90% unsaturated fatty acids.
Being a non-traditional oil seed, sunflower is considered superior to other oil seed crops due to its high oil content and natural compatibility with the agronomic environment of Pakistan (Javed et al., 2003). Thus, the expansion of sunflower cultivation can reduce the edible oil demand and supply gap in Pakistan.

A coordinated certified sunflower seed production system/programs should be established for better supply of quality seed to the farmers at cheaper rates. Public Sector’s Pakistan Oilseed Development Board (PODB) should encourage the farmers to HELIA, 28, Nr. 43, p.p. 165-178, (2005) 175 increase the local production of sunflower seed.
With an expected minor decrease in cotton seed production, but no change in rapeseed and sunflower production, total oilseed production in 2024/25 is expected to decrease marginally to 3.43 million tons, 3 percent lower than estimates of 2023/24. Palm oil imports continue growing. In line with population growth, palm oil imports are forecast
Ridge sowing of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) in a minimum
Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is a major oilseed crop grown for its edible oil across the globe including Pakistan. In Pakistan, the production of edible oil is less than the required quantity; the situation is being worsened with the increasing population. Thus, there is dire need to grow those sunflower genotypes which perform better under a given set of agronomic practices. In this 2

- How did sunflower maintain its competitiveness on Oilseeds markets?
- Sunflower succeeded in maintaining its competitiveness on oilseeds markets in the previous decades, through continuous innovation in genetics, production and markets and a growing segmentation.
- Where is sunflower produced?
- Sunflower is produced at large scale in a limited number of countries, and two thirds of the production are concentrated in Europe, including Ukraine and Russia and the Trakya region of Turkey. The other major producing countries are Argentina, China, United States, and the South-Eastern part of Africa (South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia).
- What is the share of oilseeds in the world?
- On the period 1975¨C2019, the global oilseeds production doubled every 20years, and sunflower maintained a relatively constant share in the global oilseeds production, between 7 and 10% of the total, presently 9%. But in the same time, soybean share progressed from 48 to 62% of the total, and rapeseed from 6 to 12%.
- How specific is palm oil compared to other oilseeds?
- The case of palm oil (exported at 70%) is very specific with a high concentration of the production in few countries and the necessity of processing near the production sites. This specificity of sunflower compared to other major oilseeds is that it is largely processed in the production countries.
