FFB (Fresh Fruit Bunch) of Oil Palm into CPO (Crude Palm Oil) Oil Mill
Palm oil is extracted from fresh fruit bunches (FFB) by a mechanical process, where a mill commonly handles 2.5 to 150 MT per hour of FFB. The quality of crude palm oil depends on the care taken after harvesting, particularly in the handling of the FFBs and the process adopted.
Introduction. Palm oil is extracted from fresh fruit bunches (FFB) by a mechanical process, whereby a mill commonly handles 60 to 100 mt per hour of FFB. The palm oil mill of today is based predominantly on concepts developed in the early 1950s (Mongana Report). An average size FFB weighs about 20-30 kg and contains 1500-2000 fruits (Fig. 1).

12. Crude Palm Oil Storage Tank The pure crude oil after purification is transported to the crude oil storage tank through pump and pipeline. The crude oil storage tank needs to heat the crude oil regularly to ensure the fluidity of the crude oil. According to the production needs, the pure palm crude oil is pumped to the tanker or tanker at
CPO Production Process Fresh fruit bunch (FFB) processing into crude palm oil (CPO) has several stages including raw materials input, boiling, digesting, fruit compression, waste and nut
Free Fatty Acid Formation Points in Palm Oil Processing and the - MDPI
Palm oil is produced from oil palm fruits, Elaeis guineensis Jaq., and the extracted oil is known as crude palm oil (CPO) . The fresh fruit bunch (FFB) process line from the estate to the mill steriliser includes several handling steps. Each handling step incurs FFB bruising and contributes to the accumulation of free fatty acids (FFAs).
The oil winning process, in summary, involves the reception of fresh fruit bunches from the plantations, sterilizing and threshing of the bunches to free the palm fruit, mashing the fruit and pressing out the crude palm oil. The crude oil is further treated to purify and dry it for storage and export. Large-scale plants, featuring all stages

Then, the sterilized FFB undergoes a mechanical stripping process to separate the oil containing palm fruits from its bunch, producing empty fruit bunch (EFB) as by-products. In the pressing stage, the detached palm fruits are subjected to mechanical pressure to extract their pressed liquor, a mixture of oil, water and fine fibrous material from the palm mesocarp.
The crude palm oil (CPO), at this stage, contains a mixture of palm oil (35–45 %), water (45–55 %) and fibrous materials in different portions (Pratap et al., 2010). The insoluble solids and water are settled to the bottom of the clarifier tank, while the crude palm oil is extracted from the top layer of the clarifier tank.
Palm and Palm Kernel Oil Production and Processing
The total FFB and crude palm oil (CPO) production for January and December 2010 was 74.5 million tonnes and 15.4 million tonnes, respectively. A total of 3.9 million tonnes of palm kernel oil (PKO) was produced during the same corresponding period. In the case of Indonesia, the industry has grown rapidly with the oil palm plantation expanding
Similar to production process of other products, palm oil production processes are highly affected by several factors that include the shortage of FFB, the aging of palm oil, labour shortage; replanting and seasonal constraints also affected the crude palm oil production [4]. No continuous on-line monitoring also affects the crude palm oil
- Where does FFA Formation occur in crude palm oil production?
- The aim of this study was to identify pivotal points of FFA formation during the process of crude palm oil production. Results: The present study shows that the highest FFA accumulation occurred during the conveying process at the mill before sterilisation due to significant fruit damage.
- What contributes to FFA build-up in crude palm oil production?
- Another key contributor to FFA build-up is loose fruit (LF), which is collected following FFB harvesting and is commonly processed together with FFB into crude palm oil (CPO) at the mill. The aim of this study was to identify pivotal points of FFA formation during the process of crude palm oil production.
- Why is FFB important for palm oil production?
- Thus, sufficient supply of FFB to the mill will increase the mill¡¯s oil extraction rate and kernel extraction rate. The quantity of FFB is not the major measurement that mill should look upon. The quality of FFB should be maintained so that the mill can produce lower free fatty acid crude palm oil product.
- What is crude palm oil (CPO)?
- Crude palm oil (CPO) is obtained from crushing the mesocarp and the by-product is palm kernel. Generally, crude palm oil production involves fresh fruit bunch reception processes which are FFB weighing, grading, cages loading, sterilisation, tipping and threshing, digestion, pressing, clarification and kernel extraction and drying process.
