Oilseed Fact Sheet: Oilseed Presses - SARE
An oilseed press (Fig. 1) is the heart of an oilseed pressing opera on. This fact sheet focuses on small oilseed presses used for edible oil produc on or for producing oil for fuel or bio-diesel produc on. Oilseed presses separate oilseeds such as sunflowers, canola, and soybeans into oil and oilseed meal. Pumpkin or grape seeds and brazil nuts
Pressed vegetable oils are extracted from the plant containing the oil (usually the seed), using one of two types of oil press. The most common is the screw press, which consists of a large-diameter metal screw inside a metal housing. Oil seeds are fed into the housing, where the screws mash the seeds, and create pressure which forces the oil

This can be done by the following: Weigh exactly 3.5 oz (100 grams) of the seed or nuts to be pressed. Dry them in an oven at 212-221 degrees Fahrenheit for 1.5 hours. Nuts dry better if they are crushed or ground prior to drying. After drying the seeds or nuts, weigh them again.
Grind the seeds or nuts: Use a grinder or food processor to grind the seeds or nuts into a fine paste. The consistency should be similar to a thick paste or butter. Apply pressure to extract the oil: Place the ground paste into a pressing device, such as a manual oil press or an oil expeller machine.
Processing Edible Oils - Penn State Extension
In a typical edible oil processing plant oil is extracted from the seed first using mechanical extraction (expeller press) followed by chemical extraction (hexane extraction). By using both methods less than 1% of the oil is left in the meal that is produced. The majority of this meal is sold for use in animal feed rations.
Vegetable oil can be extracted from almost any plant, but most oil is extracted from seeds. Obtainment of oil comes through pressing, in ram presses or screw presses. Building a screw press is a bit hard but it will last for a long time and will be able to provide you with oil in the long term. Modern techniques use chemical extraction with hexane.

The oil extracted will contain impurities and must be allowed to rest for about 24 hours, after which time the liquid can be decanted and stored in a sealed bottle out of the sun. The seed/nut cake created in the process can be used for a high-protein animal feed or organic fertilizer.
