5. PALM KERNEL OIL EXTRACTION - Food and Agriculture Organization
5.2 Solvent extraction. Solvent extraction processes can be divided into three main unit operations: kernel pre-treatment, oil extraction, and solvent recovery from the oil and meal. For the purposes of small-scale operations it is sufficient to mention the solvent extraction process is an alternative for high capacity mills.
The oilcake leaves the extraction machine through an adjustable cone and is then delivered to the second pressing. Because of their high oil content, Palm kernels have to be subjected to 2 stage pressing for maximum oil yield. The residue from First Stage Press is then transferred to a second palm kernel oil expeller machine for final crushing.
Palm and Palm Kernel Oil Production and Processing
The oil will dissolve in the solvent before being separated in the evaporator to separate the oil from the solvent. The simplified palm kernel oil mechanical extraction process is shown in Fig. 8.4. The basic quality parameters for palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake for export from Malaysia (MEOMA specifications) are shown in Table 8-G.
During the oil extraction, the vegetable oil is removed from the cell structure using a solvent, usually n-hexane, which is a volatile and inflammable liquid. In order to enable the solvent to penetrate unhindered into the seed, the cell walls have to be broken up and the diffusion paths have to be made as short as possible.
Comparison of solvent systems on extraction, quality
However, environmental and health concerns make them undesirable solvents. The aim of this study was to evaluate the extraction efficiency and physicochemical characteristics of palm kernel oil (PKO) extracted with the addition of acetone in HEX-acetone (1:1, vol/vol) and DCM-acetone (1:1, vol/vol) mixtures as an alternative to DCM and HEX alone.
The three basic steps in these processes are (a) kernel pre-treatment, (b) screw-pressing, and (c) oil clarification. Diagram 1: Mechanical extraction of palm kernel oil. Line (A) is for direct screw-pressing without kernel pre-treatment; Line (B) is for partial kernel pre-treatment followed by screw-pressing; and Line C is for complete pre

This stage is essential for optimal oil extraction. 4. Palm Kernel Oil Extraction. The conditioned kernels undergo mechanical pressing or solvent extraction to extract the oil. This step yields crude palm kernel oil, which will undergo further refining for various applications. 5. Refining Plam Kernel Oil
The extraction procedure of oil from the palm kernel is distinct from the palm oil extraction. The palm kernel is the true seed of the palm fruit, hence it shares similar properties and processing or milling equipment with oil seeds such as shea nuts, groundnuts, rapeseed, cottonseed, or coconut copra.

Production cost depends mainly on solvent loss and energy used in solvent recovery and pelletizing. However, oil recovery is more complete than in screw pressing. A third processing method uses pre-pressing followed by solvent extraction. The choice of process or machinery depends on capital investment, production cost, oil recovery and its value.
In direct screw pressing, kernels must undergo seed preparation steps of size reduction, flaking and steam conditioning prior to mechanical extraction. Mechanical wear and tear, maintenance expenses and electricity are the major costs. The direct solvent extraction process is used in larger plants. Production cost depends mainly on solvent loss and energy used in solvent recovery and
- What solvents are used to extract Palm kernel oil?
- Abstract This study investigated the rate of diffusion on the extraction of palm kernel oil using various solvents, namely, n-hexane, Benzene, Trichloroethylene, and Carbondisulfide. The solvents and the extracted palm kernel oil were characterized using the AOCS standard methods, and the results are shown in tables 1 and 2.
- What is palm kernel oil extraction process?
- PALM KERNEL OIL EXTRACTION Mechanical extraction processes are suitable for both small- and large- capacity operations. The three basic steps in these processes are (a) kernel pre-treatment, (b) screw-pressing, and (c) oil clarification. Diagram 2: Mechanical extraction of palm kernel oil.
- What is the model for solvent extraction of palm kernel oil?
- Abstract: The model for the solvent extraction of palm kernel oil from palm kernel was generated for the process at variedparticle sizes of palm kernel, temperature of extraction, duration of extraction and mass of palm kernel respectively using Least Square Linear Equation.
- How is palm oil extracted?
- Periodically, the shells are scooped out of the bath and discarded. The traditional oil extraction method is to fry palm kernels in old oil or simply heat the dried nuts. The fried kernels are then pounded or ground to a paste in a motorised grinder. The paste is mixed with a small quantity of water and heated to release the palm kernel oil.
