Oil palm empty fruit bunches as a promising feedstock
Fig. 2 shows the Fresh fruit bunches and Crude palm oil yield in Malaysia from 2007 to 2016 [69]. Based on Fig. 2, about 20% of crude palm oil is produced when the fresh fruit bunches undergo processing process in the oil palm mill. Hence, after the oil extraction process, about 80% of oil palm biomass will be discarded as a waste.
As the oil palm continues to mature, its yield increases and reaches peak production in years seven to 18 before gradually decreasing thereafter. The typical commercial lifespan of an oil palm is approximately 25 years. Fully mature oil palms produce 18 to 30 metric tonnes of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) per hectare.

OIL PALM INDUSTRY ECONOMIC JOURNAL (VOL. 3(1)/2003) These holdings are small and scat-tered. From Table 2, it is shown that there were 87 717 independent smallholders in the year 2000. They cultivated 320 835 ha of oil palm or 9.5% of the total oil palm areas in the country. Table 1 also shows that despite the overall decline in oil palm
OIL PALM ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE IN MALAYSIA AND R&D PROGRESS
Status of Mills and Plants A total of 451 palm oil mills in Malaysia was in operation in 2021, with a combined annual processing capacity of 115.87 million tonnes of fresh fruit bunch (FFB), of which 52.50% of palm oil mills are located in Peninsular Malaysia with a total processing capacity of 57.50 million tonnes. The year
As the world’s second-largest palm oil producer, Malaysia heavily depends on its extensive oil palm cultivation, which accounts for nearly 90% of the country’s lignocellulosic biomass waste. Approximately 20–22 tonnes of empty fruit bunches (EFBs) can be derived from an initial yield of 100 tonnes of fresh fruit bunches (FFBs) from oil palm trees. The average annual amount of EFBs
Oil Palm Fresh Fruit Bunch Ripeness Detection Methods: A
The increasing severity of the labour shortage problem in the Malaysian palm oil industry has created a need to explore other avenues for harvesting oil palm fresh fruit bunches (FFBs) such as through autonomous robots’ deployment. However, the first step in using an autonomous system to harvest FFBs is to identify which FFBs have become ripe and are ready to be harvested. In this work, we
Malaysia's Sime Darby is the largest listed palm oil company globally, based on plantation area and fresh fruit bunch production. [14] The company was created through a Malaysian government initiated merger in December 2006. [15] [16] The world's second-largest oil palm plantation company, Felda Global Ventures Holdings (FGV), is also based
Potential of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunch Resources
An enormous number of oil palm trunks and fronds are generated from plantations. Meanwhile, other biomasses like mesocarp fiber, kernel shell, and empty fruit bunches come from the milling process of fresh fruit bunches . In Malaysia, oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) up to 22–23 million tons is abundantly generated as a residue annually .

- Which Malaysian state has the largest oil palm planted area?
- Sarawak remained as the largest oil palm planted state with 1.61 million hectares or 28.0% of the total Malaysian oil palm planted area, followed by Sabah with 1.52 million hectares or 26.6%. Oil palm planted area in Peninsular Malaysia amounted to 2.61 million hectares or 45.5%.
- How did Malaysia's oil palm industry perform in 2021?
- The year 2021 was the second year the Malaysian oil palm industry experienced operating in unprecedented pandemic period.
