  • Is palm oil mill effluent a source of pollution in Malaysia?
  • Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is recognised as one of the biggest sources of pollution due to its eutrophying nature and methane emitting treatment. Although biogas recovery and utilisation are promoted through government initiatives, the motivation and support from mills still reported low in Malaysia.
  • What factors affect the performance of a palm oil mill?
  • Although the milling process is well established in the industry, insufficient research and development reported in optimising and analysing the operations of a palm oil mill. The performance of a palm oil mill (e.g., costs, utilisation and flexibility) is affected by factors such as operating time, capacity and fruit availability.
  • What is palm oil mill effluent (POME)?
  • The Mill has the capacity to handle 50 tonnes per hour of fresh fruit bunch (FFB). This FFB is processed into crude palm oil and a number of other useful by-products. During the processing of the FFB, a significant amount of wastewater is produced, with high content of organic waste materials, known as Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME).
  • Will Malaysia's palm oil production increase if all Mills reach 23% OER?
  • It is estimated that there will be an increase in Malaysian palm oil production by 2.44 M t if all mills in Malaysia can achieve the target of 23% OER [ 7 ]. The practice of POME elimination is one of the available solutions to aid the achievement of this goal.
