  • Why is FFB important in palm oil production?
  • Processing of FFB is an unavoidable part in the production of palm oil. Evolving primitively from Africa, the basic mechanical extraction process adopted in the industry still remains. As a dynamic and progressive industry significant improvements have been achieved in the palm oil milling, both hardware and software.
  • How is palm oil extracted?
  • Palm oil is extracted from fresh fruit bunches (FFB) by a mechanical process, whereby a mill commonly handles 60 to 100 mt per hour of FFB. The palm oil mill of today is based predominantly on concepts developed in the early 1950s (Mongana Report). An average size FFB weighs about 20-30 kg and contains 1500-2000 fruits ( Fig. 1 ).
  • Does oil palm production have a water footprint?
  • Water accounting across the production of fresh fruit bunch (FFB) in the oil palm¡¯s life cycle is gaining momentum arising from the importance placed on the need to quantify water footprint (WF). This article quantifies the WF of FFB production from oil palms grown in some areas in Malaysia, from an inventory data gathered from 2009-2012.
  • How does palm oil production work?
  • Palm oil production starts with fresh fruit bunch (FFB) harvesting and evacuation in the field. Time to evacuate the FFB is crucial as it could affect the quality of the oil produced. Thus, an infield evacuation machine is required. The selection of machinery is vital to fit the operation conditions and to optimise the return of investment.
  • How FFBS are harvested?
  • The FFBs are harvested according to harvesting cycles and delivered to the mills on the same day. The quality of crude palm oil is dependent on the care taken after harvesting, particularly on the handling of the FFBs. Figure 1. Fresh fruit bunches waiting for processing at palm oil mill.
  • How often do oil palms produce FFB?
  • Herbicides are applied to keep the palm circle free from weeds. An oil palm bears its first FFB within two to three years after planting and continues to do so throughout its economic life of 20¨C25 years. Each palm produces 1 FFB every 10¨C21 days. Harvesting of ripe FFB is carried out manually every 10¨C15 days.
