Uganda launches first oil drilling programme, targets 2025 output
At peak, Uganda plans to produce about 230,000 barrels of crude oil per day. The country’s crude reserves are estimated at 6.5 billion barrels, of which 1.4 billion barrels are recoverable.
The 60,000 barrels of oil per day Uganda crude oil refinery that is set for development in Kabaale, Buseruka sub-county in Hoima District is expected to start operations in 2027 according to the Energy Minister, Ruth Nankabirwa. Kingfisher Oil Field Development, Lake Albert Rift Basin, Uganda
The crude oil from the facility is planned to be transported through a 46.5km-long feeder pipeline connecting the export hub and the proposed 60,000bpd Kabaale refinery in Hoima. The crude output of the Kingfisher project will either be refined at the proposed Kabaale refinery for domestic use or transported to the Tanga Port in Tanzania through the proposed East African Crude Oil Pipeline.
The 1,440-kilometre pipeline, when complete, will transport crude oil from Hoima Western Uganda to the Tanzanian Indian Ocean Port of Tanga. The Completion of the pipeline, planned in 36 months’ time, will also give way for the commercial production of oil, which has been delayed 15 years since commercially viable deposits were first discovered.
