Small-Scale Palm Oil Production in Ghana: Practices, Environmental
Crude palm oil, particularly those produced by the small-scale industry of Ghana, is used as vegetable oil in many local cuisines. Data from the 2008 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey shows that one out of every two households (54%) in the country and four out of five (80%) households in the Central Region used palm oil in food preparation [ 5 ].

Small-scale Palm oil Processing in West and
In 2013, West Africa’s palm oil output was 2.2 million metric tons (MT), and this accounted for only 3.5%. of global output. Today, the demand for palm oil in the West African region exceeds its
In most cases, 12.5% of orchard output are defined as the maximum palm fruit consumption each month. The producing time should be caculated according to 25 days each month and 20 hours one day. Example: With 2000 hectares plantation, the production output of palm oil mill you need to build is: 2000 x 20 x 12.5% / 25 / 20 = 10 ton/hour.
Water consumption and wastewater generation from small-scale crude palm
The small-scale palm oil mills in this study consume 0.760–2.391 L (mean = 1.658 L, SD = 0.446) of water in extracting 1 L of crude palm oil. Using crude palm oil density of 879 kg/m 3 (determined at the laboratory), the quantity of water used by small-scale processor translates into 0.86–2.72 T (mean = 1.88) for a tonne of crude palm oil
Full size table. Ghana was ranked as the 13th largest producer of crude palm oil in the world in 2018, producing 375,000 metric tonnes of palm oil on a cultivated area of over 360,00 ha. Production of oil in Ghana peaked in 2011 when it produced about 448,000 metric tonnes of palm oil.
1-30 ton/d Palm Oil Refining Equipment Unit
Batch Oil Refining Process (1~30 ton/day) This line of an oil refinery is perfect as a mini or small-scale palm oil mill plant. It requires low investment capital and a smaller occupation of land. You are able to refine almost every type of crude edible oil. The primary refinery process includes three stages which are de-gumming, neutralizing
Though we face challenges, Tema Oil Refinery has undergone a remarkable transformation from a simple hydroskimming plant of 28,000bpsd to 45,000bpsd and has a rich history spanning crude oil sourcing, refining, marketing of quality petroleum products and exporting.
Tema Oil Refinery
The refinery covers a total area of 440,000 square meters. It is linked to an oil jetty at the Port of Tema by pipelines of various diameters for the transportation of crude oil and refined petroleum products. TOR's refining plant was designed in 1963 as a Hydro-skimming plant with an initial capacity of 28,000 barrels per stream day.
Ghana's Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has a capacity of 45,000 barrels per day. TOR had a total debt portfolio of $320 million by 2003. So far, the public has paid a total of $700 million under the Debt Recovery (TOR) Fund Act of 2003 (Act 624). The Act required that the tax only be used to pay out TOR debts and interest.
- How many small-scale palm oil processing mills are there in Ghana?
- Twenty-five (25) small-scale processing mills were selected from four (4) palm oil processing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDA) namely Cape Coast Metropolitan Area (CCMA), Abura Aseibu Kwamankese District (AAKD), Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira District (THLDD) and Mfantseman Municipality (MfM) all in the Central region of Ghana.
- How is palm oil processed in Ghana?
- Palm oil is processed from fresh fruits using various techniques that differ in the level of mechanization and interconnecting material transfer mechanisms. The scale of operations also differs at the level of processing. Palm oil processing in Ghana (like other West African countries) is undertaken by four (4) distinct groups of actors [ 10 ].
- Are wastewater treatment technologies applicable to small-scale palm oil processing mills in Ghana?
- Additional studies are needed in other palm oil production regions of Ghana to generate national-level data. This will guide the development of a compendium of wastewater treatment technologies applicable to small-scale processing mills in Ghana. The authors have no conflicts of interest to declare that are relevant to the content of this article.
- Is Ghana a net importer of crude palm oil?
- Ghana is a net importer of crude palm oil even though the country exports crude palm oil to other neighboring West African countries such as Senegal, Benin, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Niger [ 9 ]. There has been a steady increase in exports and imports of crude palm oil, but the trend is not consistent.
