On September 28, 2020, the illegal clear-cutting of indigenous Begyeli ancestral lands began in a biodiversity hotspot in coastal Cameroon. Cameroun Vert SARL (Camvert) is owned by logger Aboukabar al Fatih, who is close to Cameroon’s ruling party. Camvert oversees the largest monoculture palm oil plantation in Central Africa (50,000 hectares of forest) for a production of about 180,000
On the road to sustainable palm oil production in Cameroon
Photo by Mokhamad Edliadi/CIFOR. Although Cameroon, the largest palm oil producer in Central Africa, produced more than 450,000 tons in 2020, it still imports about 60,000 tons a year to meet its domestic demand. Most of the imported palm oil comes from Indonesia, Malaysia and Gabon. For several years, Cameroon has been faced with a dilemma
In 2022, Our Company owned and/or managed oil palm and rubber plantations with a total planted area of 67,591 Ha, 0.18% lower than 67,714 Ha in 2021, primarily due to the decrease in the areas for immature plantations. As recorded on 31 December 2022, Our Company operated 5 (five) palm oil processing plants, 3 (three) natural rubber processing
Cameroon to Boost Palm-Oil Production by 26% in Three Years
Cameroon, Africa’s third-biggest palm-oil producer, plans to start using higher-yielding seeds to help raise production by 26 percent over the next three years. The new seeds will be planted over an additional 30,000 hectares (74,141 acres) of land and are expected to boost production to 290,000 metric tons a year, compared with 230,000 tons now.
When we consider the real capacities of processing plants, the gap is indeed way wider,” explained Emmanuel Koulou Ada, Head of the Oilseed Sector Regulatory Committee, in 2018. According to the ASROC, the yearly crude palm oil demand from industrial crude palm oil processing units, whose number is growing, now exceeds a million tons.
Cameroon: Actual demand for palm oil exceeds 1mln tons
In need to offset the gap, some local processors now set up palm oil plantations. This is the case of Nana Bouba group, which launched a project in 2016 to plant 30,000 hectares of oil palm trees in the coastal region to supply its Azur SA refinery, which specializes in refining palm oil and producing household soap. The production of CPO and PK in Our Company is based on the supply of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) derived from both the nucleus and plasma plantations, as well as from third-party purchases. Our Company’s harvested FFB volume in 2022 showed a 0.21% decrease over 2021 figures. Total FFB production in 2022 was 376,655 tonnes (2021: 377,447 tonnes).

This cultivation would generate much-needed development in Africa and increase global food supplies.
Cameroon is ‘Africa in miniature’ as it is home to 90% of Africa’s ecological systems. A large part of Cameroon is under the Congo basin, which holds over 15% of the world’s remaining tropical forests. In 2019, the crude palm oil (CPO) production in Cameroon was 350,000 MT while the demand is much higher, making Cameroon a net importer of palm oil. To meet the growing demand for palm
